The veteran gossip blogger made headlines earlier this week after he appeared to be covered in blood and carrying a large knife during the broadcast.

Concerned viewers called emergency services, which were quickly dispatched to his Florida home that Tuesday evening, August 4. Per dispatch audio obtained by People, he was hospitalized after responders arrived at his home following reports of a "possible suicide."

The Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office also confirmed that Hilton was hospitalized under Florida's Baker Act, a state law that allows authorities to hold someone involuntarily for a period of time if they pose a threat of harm to themselves or others.

Following the incident, Hilton's family shared in a press release on his website that the columnist is recovering and "able to communicate." Now, an insider claims to know the first words he spoke from his hospital bed.

"I need help," Hilton reportedly told his mother, Teresita Lavandeira, according to a source who has known the family for nearly 20 years. The insider described the events leading up to Hilton's mental health crisis, one the blogger himself is still trying to process.

"He's really suffering. He's a man in a lot of pain. I think right now he's focused on the physical, but it's all tied together. No one deserves the torment he's going through," the source said, adding that Hilton is now stable and alert.

"He was able to articulate himself [to his mother in hospital] but I don't think he's quite self-aware enough yet [to understand exactly what happened]," the source continued. "He's still in a dark place as I understand it. Just very very sad."

The insider noted that Hilton had seemed entirely himself in the hours before the livestream. "He was acting normal. That's the thing. He was getting excited about future projects. It had been a good day up to then," the source said.

That day had reportedly started like any other, with Hilton waking up in his Miami home and diving into work, discussing projects with colleagues and texting sources as he chased pop culture scoops, per the friend. But the day soon took a devastating turn.

In a fresh statement released today, August 7, Hilton's family revealed additional details surrounding the incident, including that his children, niece, and sister were inside the home shortly before he went live on TikTok.

"When it became clear that Perez was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself, they immediately fled to protect the children from witnessing any further trauma," the statement read.

"Our highest priority right now is helping the children begin to heal from what they experienced. An important part of that process is allowing them to safely return home and begin rebuilding a sense of security and normalcy."

Hilton is a father of three to son Mario, 13, and daughters Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8, all born via surrogate. He raises them with help from his mother, according to the family friend.

The source explained that Hilton and Lavandeira had a longstanding arrangement in which she would take the children out whenever he needed some time alone. "She was the one who met the cops there and told them" what was happening inside the home, the source added.
