Hunter Biden is reportedly living outside the United States following his father’s time in office, according to a court filing. While details remain limited, past comments point to a strong connection to South Africa and a shift away from public life.
Hunter Biden has reportedly relocated abroad after his father, former President Joe Biden, left the White House. The development came to light through a legal filing tied to a civil dispute, offering a rare update on the younger Biden’s current living situation.

The information surfaced in a 14-page court document submitted on April 6, 2026, by Hunter Biden’s attorney, Barry Coburn. The filing is part of a lawsuit involving unpaid legal fees and includes a brief but notable statement that “Mr. Biden lives abroad.”
Biden has largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent months since President Donald Trump assumed office. The filing marks one of the few confirmed updates about his whereabouts since his father’s presidency ended.
Although the court document does not specify a location, Biden previously spoke about spending time outside the United States. In a November 2025 appearance on the South Africa-based “Wide Awake Podcast,” he shared that he had been dividing his time between the U.S. and Cape Town.
His wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, is originally from South Africa. The couple married in 2019 and had been living in California in the years following their wedding.
During the podcast interview, Biden expressed deep admiration for Cape Town and suggested a personal connection to the region.
“When all the all of the political and personal stuff came to an end in the last six months, I had always promised that we would spend some time over here,” he said. “I've fallen madly in love with Cape Town. You guys do not know how good you have it here. It’s the most beautiful city in the world.”
Biden’s reported move abroad comes after years of high-profile attention tied to his business dealings and personal struggles. Much of that attention intensified during his father’s presidency.
His reference to “political and personal stuff” winding down suggests a transition into a quieter phase. The decision to spend more time overseas may reflect an effort to step away from the environment that fueled much of that scrutiny.
While it is not confirmed whether he has permanently relocated, the court filing indicates that he is no longer based in the United States.
In March 2025, President Donald Trump revoked Secret Service protection early for both Hunter Biden and his sister, Ashley Biden. The decision followed the circulation of photos showing Hunter in South Africa.
The move drew attention at the time, as former presidents’ children typically receive protection for a limited period after leaving office. The early termination added another layer of visibility to Biden’s travels and lifestyle abroad.
Those developments, combined with his own comments about Cape Town, suggest that his connection to South Africa had already been established well before the recent court filing.
Hunter Biden’s reported move abroad marks a notable change following years in the public eye. While details remain scarce, the combination of legal filings and past statements points to a life increasingly centered outside the United States.
