Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship nearly ended years before their royal wedding. From university romance and intense tabloid pressure to a painful breakup that shocked royal watchers, the couple faced several obstacles before eventually finding their way back to each other.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are widely seen as one of the monarchy’s strongest partnerships, but their relationship faced several major challenges before they reached the altar. At one point, the couple’s breakup appeared serious enough to end their romance for good.
William later reflected on the split during the couple’s engagement interview.

“We both were very young, it was at university, we were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff,” he explained. “It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up, and so it was just sort of a bit of space and a bit of things like that and it worked out for the better.”
Kate admitted the breakup had been painful at the time. “I wasn't very happy about it,” she said. “But actually, it made me a stronger person.”

The couple first crossed paths while attending the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Although Kate Middleton already knew of Prince William before arriving at school, their relationship initially developed as a friendship. They bonded over sports, classes, and shared interests while spending time together around campus.
At the time, William was reportedly dating fellow student Carly Massy-Birch, while Kate was involved with Rupert Finch.

Their friendship reportedly shifted after a student fashion show in 2002, where Kate walked the runway in a sheer black dress. According to royal accounts, William immediately began seeing her differently after the event.
Friends later claimed William was clearly interested in Kate, though she reportedly remained cautious about making her feelings obvious.
By the end of their first year at St Andrews, the pair had grown much closer.

As their romance developed, William and Kate worked to keep their relationship private.
They shared living arrangements with friends during university and avoided openly discussing their romance in public. Even as rumors circulated, William described himself as single during a 2003 interview connected to his 21st birthday.

The relationship became difficult to hide in 2004 when photographers captured the couple during a ski trip in Klosters, Switzerland.
From that point forward, media attention surrounding Kate intensified. British tabloids closely followed the relationship and regularly speculated about a future engagement.

Kate eventually became known in the press as “Waity Katy,” a nickname tied to the lengthy wait before William proposed.
Despite the pressure, the relationship continued to grow more serious. Kate attended royal events and holidays connected to William’s family, fueling further engagement speculation.

After several years together, William and Kate split in 2007.
According to royal biographer Robert Jobson in his 2024 book “Catherine, The Princess of Wales,” the breakup happened during an emotional phone call.
“In an emotionally charged 30-minute conversation, they both acknowledged they were on ‘different pages,’” Jobson wrote.

The breakup quickly became major tabloid news in Britain.
Rather than disappearing from public view, Kate continued spending time with friends and family. Her sister, Pippa Middleton, reportedly moved in with her during that period.
William eventually regretted the breakup, and the pair later reconnected.
In June 2007, William reportedly invited Kate to a costume party at his barracks, where they reconciled. Soon afterward, reports confirmed the couple had reunited.

The relationship continued steadily in the years that followed, even as engagement rumors intensified.
William proposed during a trip to Kenya in 2010. “I'd been planning it for a while,” he shared during the couple’s engagement interview. “Then it just felt really right out in Africa. It was beautiful at the time.”

Kate described the proposal as a “total shock.”
“You hear a lot of horror stories about proposing and things going horribly wrong,” William added. “It went really, really well and I was really pleased she said yes.”

Since their wedding, William and Kate have become central figures within the royal family while raising Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
They have also faced several personal and public challenges together, including intense media scrutiny and Kate’s cancer diagnosis in 2024, which William later described as “the hardest” year of his life.
Despite the difficulties, their relationship has remained central to the monarchy’s future.
What once appeared uncertain during their university years ultimately became one of the royal family’s most enduring partnerships. Their relationship survived public pressure, years of speculation, and a breakup that nearly changed the course of their future together.
