Olivia Munn has shared a revealing story about a tense moment on set when a male costar objected to her character saving his. The dispute halted filming and highlighted lingering gender bias in Hollywood, even in scenes where the script clearly defined the action.
Olivia Munn has spoken about a behind-the-scenes moment that reflects a broader issue in Hollywood. The actress recalled an incident in which a male costar challenged a scripted scene because it required her character to save his, leading to a lengthy delay during filming.

Munn described the experience during an appearance on "The Drew Barrymore Show," explaining that the situation unfolded while filming an action sequence. Her character was written as someone in a position of authority, such as a CIA agent or police officer, tasked with stepping in during a critical moment.
“There have been a few times where I’ve been filming something, and my character was either like CIA, or a cop, or something, and there’s been scenes where my character has been the one to save the other character,” Munn said.
She outlined how the scene was supposed to play out. Both characters were positioned in a bunker, each covering their own side before switching.
“If you read the script," she continued, "it was that he was guarding his side, I was guarding my side, then we switch sides and then there’s a guy that was coming for him [who] was gonna shoot him in the back, so I shoot him."
Despite the clear direction in the script, Munn said her costar interrupted filming to object to the moment. His concern centered on the idea of being saved by her character. “Wait, wait, wait. Hold on. She can’t save me. No, no. She can’t save me,” he said.
The objection brought production to a standstill. Munn recalled that filming paused for about 45 minutes as the actor argued with the director. The disagreement was audible across the set and created a tense environment.
She described the interaction as combative, with the actor pushing back against the scene as written.
With production stalled, Munn stepped in to help resolve the issue. Rather than escalate the disagreement, she made a slight change in how the moment was framed.
"I said, ‘Okay, how about instead of my character saving you, it’s just that we switch because it’s time for us to switch, and so this is my guy to get,’ and he was like, ‘Okay.’” she described.
Her suggestion reframed the action in a way that satisfied her costar without altering what actually happened on screen. "Now, here's the interesting thing," she added. "Nothing changed. It's just what he thought. I was doing the exact same thing."
Munn did not identify the project or the actor involved, but her account points to a pattern that many actresses have described over the years. Even small moments can become points of tension when they challenge traditional expectations.
Experiences like this have shaped how Munn approaches her career. She has said that she is more intentional about the projects she takes on, aiming to avoid situations where similar conflicts might arise.
By choosing roles carefully, she works to ensure that the characters she portrays are consistent with how they are written, without being altered by bias during production.
Olivia Munn’s account offers a clear example of how gender bias can surface in everyday moments on set. While the situation was eventually resolved, it revealed how quickly a routine scene can turn into a larger issue. Her experience underscores the importance of sticking to the script and addressing outdated attitudes when they arise.
