After years of candor about giving up alcohol following his split from Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt is now just as candid about picking it back up. The actor says he's approaching drinking with a new sense of caution this time around.

Brad Pitt is drinking again. The "Fight Club" star, who previously revealed he joined a 12-step program following his split from ex-wife Angelina Jolie, has shared that he decided to end his sobriety.

The 62-year-old actor revealed the development while speaking with Esquire for a profile published Monday, August 10. After Pitt offered interviewer Ryan D'Agostino wine, the interviewer asked if the drink was available only for guests.

This prompted the "F1" star to reveal that he partakes in alcohol now in moderation. "No, I got — I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon," Pitt said with a laugh, adding that he now drinks alcohol in a "more restrained" manner.

"I got overconfident a couple times, went, 'Yep, nope, not good for me. Not in big quantities,'" he explained. When asked if this means he can enjoy a glass of wine, he added, "Yeah. Well I can have a few. But I can't have a lot. I have to be professional about it."

Pitt gave up drinking in 2016 when he split from Jolie, with whom he shares six children. The "Salt" actress filed for divorce from Pitt days after the pair allegedly got into a dispute while flying from France to Los Angeles on the couple's private plane.

Over the years, Pitt has been candid about his path to sobriety, revisiting the topic in several interviews. In 2017, Pitt told GQ that he couldn't remember "a day" after leaving college when he "wasn't boozing or had a spliff, or something."

The "Meet Joe Black" star, who said he was six months sober at the time, also told GQ that he "stopped everything except boozing" once he and Jolie started their family, before eventually realizing he was "boozing too much" in 2016.

"I'm really happy it's been half a year now, which is bittersweet, but I've got my feelings in my fingertips again," he said of his sobriety from alcohol at the time. "I think that's part of the human challenge: You either deny them all of your life or you answer them and evolve."

In 2019, Pitt opened up further about his sobriety — specifically, the year and a half he spent in a 12-step program after Jolie filed for divorce — during an in-depth conversation with The New York Times.

"You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard. It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself," he told the outlet of his time in the program.

Then in 2020, Pitt publicly thanked actor Bradley Cooper for helping him achieve sobriety. "I got sober because of this guy," he said during an acceptance speech at the National Board of Review's annual awards gala. "And every day has been happier since."

Most recently, in June 2025, Pitt sat down with Dax Shepard for an episode of "Armchair Expert" and once again reflected on his sobriety.

"I am a stubborn [expletive], but when I've stepped in [expletive], I'm pretty good at taking responsibility for it and owning up to it," he told Shepard. "And now it's a quest to ... make sure it doesn't happen again."
