George and Amal Clooney Forced to Evacuate Home in France Amid Wildfires

The couple has called the French countryside home for less than a year, drawn by the privacy and simplicity it offered their family. Now that same home hangs in the balance as flames sweep across the region.

George and Amal Clooney have evacuated their home in France amid the wildfires sweeping across Europe. News of their departure broke after the couple detailed their evacuation in a letter to the mayor of their town.

George and Amal, along with their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, have called the town of Brignoles home since late 2025. The commune sits in France's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, one of several areas battling out-of-control blazes.

Their property lies in one of the many regions where wildfires are currently tearing through France, Spain, Italy, and Greece. A representative for Clooney confirmed that the pair shared news of their evacuation in a letter addressed to the mayor of Brignoles.

"Dear Didier, At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment," the letter began.

"As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise 2 things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole," the letter continued. "We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."

The fires scorching southwest France are currently four times the size of Paris, the Associated Press reported Thursday, July 30. Authorities told the outlet that France's largest blaze, burning in the Gironde region, had not grown overnight thanks to calmer conditions.

But as temperatures climbed toward 40 C (104 F) Wednesday afternoon and winds picked up again, that brief calm looked unlikely to hold. The AP also noted that the fires have claimed the lives of three firefighters in Greece.

Meanwhile, CNN reported that roughly 224,000 people were forced from their homes in France's Gironde region, with another 3,000 evacuated from Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. In Spain, at least 63,152 residents were displaced by the flames.

George, 64, and Amal, 48, have largely shielded their family life from the public eye. Still, in an October 2025 interview with Esquire, the "Ocean's Eleven" star opened up about why the couple chose to settle at a farm in France as their primary residence.

"A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it," he explained. "But now, for them, it's like — they're not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life."

George also admitted he'd worried about raising his kids amid the pressures of Hollywood in Los Angeles.

"I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life," he said. "France — they kind of don't give a [expletive] about fame. I don't want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don't want them being compared to somebody else's famous kids."

Beyond the French farmhouse, George also owns an estate in England, a villa on Lake Como in Italy, and a property near his family in Kentucky. He, Amal, and their children were granted French citizenship this past December.
