In a candid new interview, the Hollywood veteran detailed the harrowing moment he felt closest to giving up. His words offer a rare, unfiltered look at the toll private turmoil can take on even the most successful lives.

Brad Pitt is reflecting on a painful, if fleeting, moment from his past. The star of "Meet Joe Black" recently opened up about a brief stretch of suicidal ideation that ultimately reshaped how he approaches mental health.

"I was never suicidal in any way," Pitt said during his cover interview for Esquire, published August 10. "It just was not my makeup. In fact, if I have any afflictions, it's probably being a congenital optimist."

The 62-year-old father of six — Maddox, 24, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, Pax, 22, and 18-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, whom he shares with ex-wife Angelina Jolie — explained that his natural optimism has carried him through countless hard times.

"As my forever-funny friend David Fincher will say, 'Yeah, you see the glass as half full, but it's half full of urine,'" he continued. Even so, that upbeat outlook hasn't always shielded him from darker moments.

"I've never been suicidal except for one little period. And in that one little period, I just thought — I just couldn't — just didn't see a way out," he shared. "The pain was so oppressive that — I wasn't going to act on this, but I could feel — I could feel the cold steel of the bullet in my head, and it felt like relief."

"And I thought, 'Oh, okay, now I understand' — I understand suicide, in the sense that it's just relief," Pitt said. "It's just looking for relief from the pain. But I also think we have incredible survival instincts."

Though the Oscar winner — who lost his mother in August 2025 — stressed that his overall life circumstances feel like he "won the lottery," he candidly admitted that navigating suicidal ideation was far from simple, noting, "This [expletive] ain't easy."

Pitt steered clear of specifics about what triggered his struggles, but he did acknowledge that "family stuff" played a role, adding, "We could leave it at that."

His candid admission arrives less than a month after his and Jolie's daughter, Vivienne, filed a petition to drop his last name — a decision that followed similar filings earlier this year from siblings Maddox, Zahara, and Shiloh.

The recurring pattern has drawn attention from people close to the actor. "It's sad to see someone repeatedly publicize their successful alienation of their children from the other parent," a source close to Pitt previously said.

"This is what complete and total parental alienation looks like — it's awful, deliberate and unnecessary, only serving the interest of the parent feeling some perverse pleasure at excluding another caring parent from her children's lives," they said.

While Pitt and Jolie's children haven't publicly detailed their reasons for shedding their father's surname, the "Changeling" actress reportedly holds no resentment toward her ex, from whom she filed for divorce back in 2016.

"If people knew the whole truth, they would have more sympathy for the children and respect them," an insider said. "The fact they aren't speaking ill or sharing things publicly only shows their decency. Angie hasn't been fighting and isn't angry. She just wants everyone to heal."
