“I guess it means you're a part of history,” Liu said with a smile, reflecting on the connection between her work and the song’s lasting recognition.

“Independent Women, Part 1” was recorded by Destiny’s Child, made up of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams, for the 2000 film “Charlie’s Angels.” The song was later included on the group’s 2001 album “Survivor.”

In “Charlie’s Angels,” Liu starred alongside Barrymore and Diaz as part of a trio working for a private detective agency. The film served as a continuation of the original television series that aired from 1976 to 1981, starring Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Jaclyn Smith.

The 2000 adaptation brought a new generation to the franchise. Its combination of action, humor, and star power contributed to its success, while the soundtrack played a key role in its promotion.

For Liu, the film marked a significant point in her career. The reference in “Independent Women, Part 1” became one of the most recognizable elements tied to the project, linking her name to a song that continues to be widely known.

A Health Scare Early in Her Career

Before reaching that level of visibility, Liu faced a personal health scare during the early stages of her career.

After moving to Los Angeles in the early 1990s to pursue acting, she discovered a lump in her breast and sought medical attention. Following a brief examination, she was told she had cancer.

The diagnosis was later proven incorrect. The lump was benign, but confirmation only came after she underwent surgery.

Looking back, Liu has said that important diagnostic steps were not taken at the time, including ordering a mammogram. Those steps may have helped avoid surgery. "I really did not know how to advocate for myself,” she said.

A Shift Toward Proactive Care

The experience changed how Liu approaches her health. She has since emphasized the importance of regular screenings and being actively involved in medical decisions.

“Sharing this story is important for other people to get screened early,” she explained. Liu has made routine checkups part of her healthcare approach, including annual mammograms with specialists focused on breast health and cancer detection.

“After that, I would go in annually and get a mammogram — they specifically specialized in breasts and cancer and mammography,” she added.

Her focus has remained on maintaining consistent care and ensuring she has clear information when making decisions about her health.

Encouraging Women to Prioritize Screenings

Liu has also addressed the challenges many women face when it comes to prioritizing their own health.

“We are so busy as women, as parents, as daughters. I think we overextend ourselves and we get so busy that we end up pushing the appointment,” she said.

She acknowledged that scheduling and attending appointments can be inconvenient, but stressed that they are essential.

“I think if you do for yourself and you give back to yourself, it's not just like tenfold, it's a hundredfold. It can be life-saving. And life-changing," she concluded.

Lucy Liu’s career includes defining roles and cultural moments that continue to resonate. Her association with “Independent Women, Part 1” reflects the lasting impact of “Charlie’s Angels,” while her health advocacy underscores the importance of awareness and early detection. Together, these elements present a broader picture of her influence both on and off screen.
