Peter Ostrum was just a kid performing at the Cleveland Playhouse when casting agents spotted him and flew him to Munich to play Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

He was 12, living abroad, and working alongside Gene Wilder — and the studio wanted him for three more films after that. He turned it down. Not long after wrapping, his family bought a horse, and Ostrum started spending time at the stable.

Kay Panabaker wasn't your average teen star. She graduated high school as valedictorian at age 13, earned an associate's degree at 15, and finished her online bachelor's in history from UCLA before she turned 18 — all while acting in shows like 7th Heaven, ER, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and No Ordinary Family.

Her breakout came in 2004 on The WB's Summerland, where she starred opposite a young Zac Efron. But somewhere along the way, the passion faded.

Panabaker later revealed that a producer once told her she needed to lose weight for a storyline — despite the fact that she barely weighed a hundred pounds at the time, and the weight loss had nothing to do with her character's plot.

She left acting behind, went back to school, and completed an 18-month animal program in Gainesville, Florida. After an internship at Disney World, she was hired as an Associate Animal Keeper, working hands-on with elephants, goats, birds of prey, and more.

She now earns a fraction of her old acting income — and says she's never been happier.

The Hairspray Star Who Picked Up a Makeup Brush for Real

Nikki Blonskyshot to fame as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray (2007), earning a Critics' Choice Award and nominations for a Golden Globe and a SAG Award. She followed it up with a lead role in the ABC Family series Huge.

Then, just a few years later, she quietly earned her cosmetology license. Blonsky confirmed she'd taken a job at a Long Island salon, writing on social media at the time that she was proud to be working and helping pay bills.

She stressed that taking a regular job didn't mean she was giving up on her dreams. She confirmed to her followers that she was working as a makeup artist at Superstar Salon in her hometown — years after starring in a major studio film.

The Nickelodeon Star Chasing a Manicurist License

Amanda Bynes was a household name by her teens, headlining The Amanda Show at just 13 and starring alongside Colin Firth, Frankie Muniz, and Jennie Garth throughout the early 2000s. She won multiple Kids' Choice Awards before she'd even graduated high school.

He's now a law professor teaching corporate law and mergers and acquisitions, and his legal scholarship has been cited by Delaware's Court of Chancery, a federal appeals court, and both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. In 2011, President Obama appointed him to a national scholarship foundation's board of trustees.

Michael Schoeffling became a teen heartthrob overnight as Jake Ryan in Sixteen Candles, and went on to star in Vision Quest and opposite Cher and Winona Ryder in Mermaids. He seemed poised for major stardom. Instead, he built something with his hands.

While still acting, Schoeffling was already running a successful furniture-making business out of his home near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He said the work suited him better than acting ever did — no director, no script, just him and the material.

He chose to raise his family in his home state rather than chase stardom in Los Angeles, saying he could live comfortably there and didn't need much more. His last known words on the matter were blunt: he had chairs to finish.

Erik Estrada spent years playing California Highway Patrol officer Frank "Ponch" Poncherello on the hit series CHiPs, running from 1977 to 1983. What most fans never realized is that becoming a real police officer had been his goal long before acting ever entered the picture.

As a kid, Estrada had promised his mother that if acting didn't work out by the time he turned 30, he'd come back to New York and become a cop.

Estrada was sworn in as a reserve police officer in St. Anthony, Idaho, at a ceremony held at City Hall, joining a department serving a town of roughly 3,500 people. He'd already spent years working as a reserve officer in Muncie, Indiana, deliberately working nights so he wouldn't draw attention.

His focus in law enforcement became protecting children from online predators, a mission that grew out of what he witnessed working alongside officers who investigated internet crimes against kids. He helped develop tools to track and record information on missing children to speed up recovery efforts.

"Education is the best protection, especially on the internet," Estrada said. "Children should be educated in how to handle a chat room. Don't give out personal information."

He chose St. Anthony specifically because smaller communities were quicker to partner with his organization, without the red tape he ran into in bigger cities.

Estrada has said he considers himself lucky to have lived out both of his childhood dreams — playing a cop on television, and then actually becoming one.
