Just minutes before our wedding, my fiancé disappeared without a trace. No goodbyes, no explanations—just gone. Four months later, with no answers, I hired a private detective to find him. What I uncovered revealed a truth I never expected.

You think you're unlucky? Well, my fiancé ran away from our wedding just minutes before the ceremony was about to begin. How about that? I guess I should give you a little more context.

Mike and I had been dating for two years before he proposed. It was very romantic.

We were walking on our favorite beach at sunset, collecting seashells, like we’d done so many times before.

At one point, Mike said, "Turn around. I found a really nice shell. I want it to be a surprise."

I smiled and turned away, curious to see what he had found. A few seconds passed, and I heard him say, "You can turn around now."

I turned and froze. Mike was kneeling on one knee, holding a small box with THE ring. My heart raced. "Paige, will—"

Before he could say more, I cut him off. "Yes! Yes! Yes!" I yelled, my voice shaky, tears already running down my face.

Mike tried to continue. "I still want to finish. Paige, will you—"

"Yes!" I interrupted again, not wanting to hear anything more.

So Mike hurriedly said, "Paige-will-you-marry-me?" as if afraid I would stop him again.

"YES!" I screamed, joy filling my chest.

Mike laughed, relieved. He carefully slid the ring onto my finger. I jumped into his arms, kissing him deeply. It was perfect. I felt like the luckiest woman alive.

When I told my parents about Mike’s proposal, my dad didn’t hesitate for a second.

"I’ll pay for the whole wedding," he said, like it was no big deal.

I tried to refuse, but arguing with my father was like talking to a brick wall. He always got his way, no matter what.

Growing up in a wealthy family, I never really fit in. I never cared much about money or fancy things.

All I wanted was to live a simple life, so I became a veterinarian. Helping animals was what made me happy.

The wedding planning went smoothly, almost too smoothly. My dad made sure every detail was taken care of, even when I tried to keep things simple.

Still, everything came together better than I ever dreamed. Mike and I were on the same page about everything. It felt perfect.

Finally, the wedding day arrived, and I couldn’t believe how beautiful everything looked.

We had rented a lavish estate, tucked away near a forest. It was everything I never expected—a fairytale setting.

I felt like a princess. As I stood in the room waiting for the photographer to give us the signal, nerves began to creep in.

But when I saw Mike waiting for me, everything calmed down. His eyes filled with tears when he saw me.

"You look so beautiful," Mike said, his eyes sparkling with admiration.

"Thank you, you're not bad yourself," I said, laughing softly. I kissed him gently, feeling the excitement build.

We went through the photo session, smiling through poses. I felt like I was floating on air, everything falling into place perfectly.

After the photos, I went back to the room to wait for the ceremony to begin. My heart was racing with nerves, but I couldn’t stop smiling.

About ten minutes before the ceremony was supposed to start, my maid of honor, Casey, burst into the room.

"Mike's gone," she said, her voice urgent.

I laughed, thinking it was another one of her pranks. "Ha-ha, very funny, good one," I replied, not taking her seriously.

Casey was known for her jokes, and after years of friendship, I thought she was just messing with me.

"Paige, I’m serious, Mike's gone," Casey said, her face showing no sign of humor.

I felt a sudden chill run down my spine, but I still didn’t believe it. "Casey, please, I’m already nervous," I said.

"And you should be, because your fiancé has disappeared!" Casey's voice grew more serious.

"So this isn’t a joke?" I asked, still hoping it wasn’t true.

"This is no joke," Casey replied, her expression grim.

I stood up and started searching for Mike. I went to his room first, but it was empty.

I quickly went to the groomsmen's room next. They were all sitting there, their faces pale and worried.

"Where’s Mike?" I asked Aaron, the best man, trying to stay calm.

"We can’t find him," Aaron said. "He’s not answering texts or calls."

That’s when the panic set in. "What... what do you mean you can’t find him?" I asked, my voice shaky.

"He seems to have disappeared, he’s nowhere to be found," Aaron explained, his voice full of concern.

"What about our car?" I asked, grasping for any clue.

"It’s parked in the yard," Aaron said.

"Then he has to be somewhere here," I insisted.

We started searching every room, every bathroom, and every corner of the estate.

The house, which had felt so beautiful and full of promise just hours ago, now felt empty and cold.

As the minutes passed, more guests joined the search, and soon it seemed like everyone was looking for him.

My dad came up to me and hugged me tightly. "The most important thing now is to stay calm," he said, his voice steady.

"I can’t stay calm! My fiancé's gone!" I shouted, frustration and fear overwhelming me.

Dad gently patted me on the head. "What can I do to help?" he asked, his calmness only making me feel more desperate.

"Can you and Mom go to our place and check if he’s there?" I asked, my voice trembling.

Dad nodded, and without saying much, he went to the car. Only then did I start to really worry.

My dad had never liked Mike. He always said Mike was after our money, that he didn’t deserve me, and that I could do better.

He'd always followed that up with, “I’ll support whatever choice you make,” but I knew deep down he didn’t approve.

I couldn’t help but wonder: If Mike was really at home, what would my dad do when he saw him?

As the minutes passed, I kept checking my phone, waiting for any sign, but nothing came.

Hours went by, and my panic grew. Still no word from Mike. Not a text. Not a call. He wasn’t answering anyone’s calls—not his parents, not mine.

Finally, Dad came back, his face grim. "Mike wasn’t there," he said. My wedding day had turned into a nightmare.

I found myself sitting at the wedding table. Now, the only thing there was the wedding cake— untouched and full of mockery.

Eventually, I grabbed a teaspoon and dug into the cake. It was the only thing that seemed to comfort me in that moment.

Then, out of nowhere, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Mike. I stared at the screen in disbelief.

I can’t do this, I’m sorry...

That was it. No explanation. Just those few words. I immediately tried calling him, hoping maybe it was a mistake.

But all I got was a dead line. "The number doesn’t exist," it said. I slammed my phone down in frustration. What kind of person does this?

Four months passed, and Mike had disappeared completely. No one had heard from him, not even his parents.

He’d reached out to them once or twice, but he never told them where he was or what he was doing.

A month ago, I’d had enough. I hired a private detective to find him. I didn’t want him back.

I didn’t need his apologies, but I needed answers. I needed to know why he ran away from our wedding.

Finally, the detective found something. Mike was living in another state, far away.

The detective gave me his new address and phone number. Without thinking, I bought a plane ticket. I needed to get some closure.

When I arrived at Mike’s building, I knew I had to face him. Luckily, one of his neighbors was leaving the building.

So I was able to slip in behind them. I knew Mike wouldn’t let me in if he knew I was coming, so I had to be careful.

I walked up to his door and knocked, trying to appear confident. Mike opened the door immediately, but when he saw me standing there, he froze, his eyes wide with shock.

"Pa... Paige?" he stammered, almost like he couldn’t believe I was standing in front of him.

"Hi, Mike," I said, pushing past him without waiting for an invitation.

"What... what are you doing here?" he asked, clearly stunned by my sudden arrival.

"I want answers. Why did you run away from our wedding?" I demanded, feeling the anger rise inside me.

"Listen, I’m really sorry, truly. But I couldn’t do it any other way," Mike said, his voice shaky, almost pleading.

"The time for apologies has passed," I snapped.

"Please, Paige, I’m really sorry. Forgive me," Mike said.

"I can’t tell you. But please forgive me," Mike begged again.

"Alright, then I’m not leaving until you tell me," I said, sitting down on the couch.

"I can’t tell you. Forgive me and let this go," Mike repeated.

"Why can’t you tell me?" I asked.

"Because I promised your dad," Mike said.

"My dad?" I asked. "Now you definitely have to explain everything."

Mike sighed heavily and covered his face with his hands. "On our wedding...," he started, hesitating. "On our wedding day, your dad came up to me and said he’d give me a check for $80,000 if I left right then and never came back," he finally admitted.

"WHAT?" I shouted, my voice rising with disbelief.

"Yes. Paige, I love you, but this was about $80,000," Mike said.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. "You love me?! You put a price tag on me for $80,000! Is that what I’m worth to you?!" I screamed.

"To be fair, it was your dad who set the amount, not me," Mike said, trying to justify himself.

"You took the money! You traded our relationship, our future, for it!" I shouted, shaking my head in disbelief. "If you had married me, you could’ve had more than just $80,000!"

"Your dad hates me, he wouldn’t have left me anything. But this is $80,000! I’ve never seen that much money in my life!" Mike said.

I snorted, the reality of it all sinking in. "You know what? You’re pathetic!" I shouted, standing up and heading for the door.

"Where are you going?" Mike asked.

"To thank my dad for saving me from someone as awful as you!" I yelled, storming out of Mike’s apartment, and slamming the door behind me.

As I walked away, I knew I still had a conversation with my dad ahead of me. I had to understand why he did this on my wedding day, but honestly, I also had to thank him.
