Dolly Parton’s Sister Stella Shares Insight Into the Singer’s Marriage to Carl Dean

Long before she became a global music legend, Dolly Parton found steady footing in a marriage built far from the public eye. Now her sister is offering a rare glimpse into just how deep — and different — that partnership really was.

Dolly Parton's sister, Stella Parton, 77, says the country icon's private relationship with her late husband, Carl Thomas Dean, was unlike any other.

The couple had been married for nearly six decades and largely kept their bond out of the spotlight. Speaking during an interview on "CBS Mornings," Stella described the relationship as a "sweet, private romance."

She added, "I know their relationship was very unique and very deep and loyal. And I think it broke her heart to see him in the shape he, you know, got to before he passed away."

"But I don't think that's what made her sick," Stella said. "I think my sister worked so hard for so long and just kept going. You know, even to the last conversation I had with her, she was working. That was her passion."

Stella also shared that Carl "loved [Dolly] enough to let her be what she was," though she hinted that he may have secretly wished for a quieter, simpler version of their life together.

"He would rather her be at the house with her hair up in a ponytail and barefooted, cookin' in the kitchen and just, you know, messin' around the house," she said. "That's, I think, that's what he would have preferred."

Dolly herself echoed similar sentiments about her notoriously private partner, who supported her career from behind the scenes, in an interview with People for a November 2025 cover story.

"My husband was very independent, and he liked being alone. He didn't really care about being with anybody but me," Parton continued. "He had a few friends, but he loved being on the farm and doing his thing. He was kind of a loner, which worked out best for us."

Even so, Carl remained a steady anchor for the star, who confessed, "Without Carl, I wouldn't be here."

"His whole thing was he was famous for not being famous. I've exposed him now. It's probably a good thing he's gone or he'd kick my ass," Parton quipped. "But I think that he'd appreciate how I've presented our love."

The couple wed quietly in 1966 and never had children, but their marriage endured for decades. As Dolly once put it, "Ours is a great old love story. Most people don't stay that close that long. That's a loss."

"Nobody can ever know that unless you've experienced it yourself. He will always be in my heart and in my memories," she said. Much of what kept the pair together, it seems, was how different they were from one another.

Back in 2015, Dolly told People that "they say that opposites attract, and it's true." "We're completely opposite, but that's what makes it fun. I never know what he's gonna say or do. He's always surprising me," she shared.

"My husband is a good man, first of all," she continued. "He's a deep person, but he has a great and warped sense of humor. He makes me laugh and entertains me. He's very secure within himself."

Carl Dean died at age 82 on March 3, 2025. Dolly followed a little over a year later, passing away on August 25, 2026, after struggling with ongoing autoimmune issues and a brief battle with an undisclosed form of cancer. She was 80.
