McAdams appeared during the show’s “In Memoriam” segment on Sunday, March 15, 2026, to recognize the contributions of O’Hara and Keaton.

“This year, we lost so many artists, including actresses whose talent and originality widened the world for all of us,” McAdams said at the beginning of her speech.

Growing emotional, McAdams highlighted Keaton’s many roles both on and off screen. “She wore so many hats, literally and figuratively: actress, artist, author, activist, but no hat [was] more important to her than being mother to her two children,” she said.

The two actresses previously worked together on “The Family Stone,” a connection McAdams referenced while sharing a personal story from their time on set.

A Personal Memory on Set

McAdams recalled how Keaton would often sing an old Girl Scout song during filming, describing it as something that perfectly captured her spirit.

“‘Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, and the other is gold. The circle is round. It has no end. That’s how long I’ll be your friend,’” she said, remembering the song. Ultimately, she ended by honoring Keaton's life of "silver and gold, a legend with no end."

Keaton died on October 11, 2025, after suffering from pneumonia at the age of 79. O’Hara passed away on January 30, 2026, at the age of 71 following a brief illness. It was later revealed that she had suffered from a pulmonary embolism, with rectal cancer as the underlying cause.

McAdams’ tribute stood out as one of the most heartfelt moments of the 2026 Oscars award show. By sharing both admiration and personal memories, she honored O’Hara and Keaton in a way that underscored their lasting influence on Hollywood and those who worked alongside them.
