George Clooney never set out to build a billion-dollar brand — he just wanted great tequila to share with friends. But the passion project that became Casamigos grew into a massive success, and now Clooney and Rande Gerber are quietly brewing their next big venture.

George Clooney has worn many hats throughout his decades-long career — actor, director, humanitarian, and, for a time, tequila entrepreneur. But before his name was tied to one of the biggest celebrity business success stories in recent memory, Casamigos was never meant to be a worldwide sensation. In fact, the beloved tequila brand started as something far more intimate: a drink shared among friends.

A Tequila Born From Friendship

Longtime friends George Clooney, Rande Gerber, and property developer Mike Meldman first created Casamigos simply because they loved tequila. Whether on the rocks, straight up, or occasionally straight from the bottle, it became a staple of their gatherings. Their idea was simple — make a tequila so smooth and flavorful that it didn’t need salt, lime, or anything to mask harshness.

The trio spent years refining their creation in Jalisco, Mexico, holding blind tastings until they finally landed on the perfect blend. For a long time, Casamigos wasn't a brand at all — it was their private house tequila, served to friends and family at their retreats in Mexico. The name itself, "house of friends," reflected the spirit behind the drink.

What began as a personal indulgence soon grew into something bigger than they ever imagined. By 2013, demand from those who tried it was strong enough that they officially founded Casamigos and brought it to market. The brand quickly earned a cult following, thanks to its ultra-smooth taste and the genuine story behind it.

A Billion-Dollar Payoff

Just four years after launching publicly, Casamigos caught the attention of global spirits giant Diageo. In 2017, the company announced it would acquire the tequila brand in a massive deal worth up to $1 billion. Diageo agreed to pay $700 million upfront, with the remaining $300 million contingent on the brand’s performance over the next decade.

For Clooney, who split ownership three ways with Gerber and Meldman, the sale was life-changing. After taxes, his share reportedly amounted to around $150 million.

It was a staggering milestone, even for someone with an already impressive career. In 2025, Clooney's net worth was estimated at roughly $500 million — a figure shaped not only by Hollywood paychecks, but also by endorsements and his savvy entry into the spirits business.

The Next Chapter: A New Beverage on the Horizon

Even with Casamigos now under the Diageo umbrella, Clooney and Gerber have not stepped away from the entrepreneurial world. According to reports, the longtime friends have been quietly crafting a new venture — this time, a non-alcoholic beer.

The concept is said to echo the origins of Casamigos, born once again out of casual time spent together. Similar to when the pair were neighbors with side-by-side Mexican homes — the setting where Casamigos came to life — their latest idea seems rooted in the same easygoing camaraderie.

While details remain under wraps, the project hints at another lifestyle-driven brand designed around authenticity, taste, and friendship.

George Clooney's transition into the world of spirits proved that his influence reaches far beyond Hollywood. Casamigos wasn't a celebrity-branded product built for profit; it was crafted from passion, shared experiences, and a desire to perfect something they already loved.
