October 18, 2025
The R&B legend, who rose to fame in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, passed away following a private battle with cancer. He is survived by his three children, one of whom was said to be at his side when he died.
D'Angelo, the R&B star who pioneered the neo-soul genre, died in New York City on October 14, 2025, following a quiet battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 51. His family confirmed his passing in a statement published through multiple outlets.

"The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life," his family said. "After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D'Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D'Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025."
D'Angelo had been in hospice care for two weeks after spending months in a hospital, according to a source who spoke with People. The singer never married, but he was a father to three children: his sons, Michael (Mike) Jr and Morocco, and his daughter, Imani. Here's everything to know about them.

Michael Archer Jr. was born on February 28, 1997. He is D'Angelo's first child with late R&B singer Angie Stone. Michael Jr. has followed in his parents' footsteps as a musician, though he once admitted he previously tried to separate himself from their shadows.
"I used to try to separate myself from my parents cause it always felt like I was fated to be in their shadows forever," he wrote in a March 2025 post. "But thankfully, long before, momma left I learned to embrace them and their legacy full on. I'm blessed and happy to have had this moment with my momma man."
Shortly after his father's death, a source revealed to People that he was by his father's side during his final days. "His son was there with him and had been with him in the hospital," the source said, adding that Michael Jr. had "been through a lot" in a short space of time. His mother died just six months prior to his father, following a car accident.
Imani is D'Angelo's only daughter, who was born in Los Angeles. During a November 2024 interview with Bold Journey, she shared that she moved around the East Coast until she was about 13, adding that she lived the longest in Kissimmee, Florida.
Like her older brother, Imani followed in her father's footsteps and is an aspiring singer. However, her creative journey began with visual arts. "I have always been into the arts!" she told Shoutout LA in June 2024.
"I loved to draw and write books when I was a child until I was 7! At that age I heard a Keshia Cole song on the radio and that was it for me haha! From then on I knew music was what I wanted to do!" she continued.
Around age 16, she began writing her own songs, though she admitted that the first few "sucked." Still, she kept at it and eventually developed her writing style and rhythm. Imani doesn't speak much about her family, but she did dedicate a sweet tribute following her father's passing.
D'Angelo's youngest son is named Morocco Archer. Little is known about Morocco as D'Angelo never publicly shared any details about his youngest child and has kept him out of the spotlight.
