According to NBC News, Kirk was born on October 14, 1993, in Arlington Heights, a suburb of Chicago. His parents raised him in nearby Prospect Heights, where he spent his childhood and teenage years.

Kirk attended Wheeling High School, where he was active in the Eagle Scout Association and the marching band. He also played football and basketball. Local officials described him as a familiar figure in the community.
