The Oscars is known for its glamour, emotional speeches, and surprise wins. Each year, audiences around the world tune in to watch Hollywood’s biggest stars celebrate the best performances and films in the industry.
Behind the scenes, however, the prestigious event operates under a detailed set of rules. Nominees, presenters, and guests are expected to follow strict guidelines while attending the ceremony.

The Academy Awards, hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), recognizes outstanding performances, films, and creative achievements in filmmaking. Since 2001, the ceremony has been held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where many of the industry’s most influential figures gather for the celebration.
Tickets to the event are extremely limited, and attendance comes with specific expectations. From dress codes to venue policies, guests and nominees must follow several rules throughout the night.

Here are six rules you might not know about the Oscars:
The Oscars red carpet is famous for its fashion, but there are still guidelines that guests are encouraged to follow. Actresses are typically asked to wear formal evening gowns, usually maxi or floor-length styles. Pastel shades have often been recommended for the event. Mini and midi dresses are discouraged, as are bright red or heavily glittered looks.
For men, the traditional expectation has been white tie attire with formal evening accessories. In recent years, however, the event has transitioned into more of a black-tie affair.
The Academy has also encouraged sustainability in fashion choices. Celebrities are increasingly invited to wear vintage, borrowed, or recycled looks as part of environmentally conscious efforts.

Guests attending the ceremony cannot simply leave their seats whenever they wish. Bathroom breaks are typically limited to commercial breaks during the broadcast. During the live portions of the ceremony, guests are expected to remain seated.
If someone leaves at the wrong moment, they may not be able to return to their seat until the next commercial break. This rule helps prevent distractions during speeches and award presentations.

The Dolby Theatre has strict rules about outside food and beverages. Guests are not allowed to bring outside food or drinks into the venue, including water. Instead, refreshments available during the event are prepared and provided by the organizers.

Oscar acceptance speeches may feel spontaneous, but they are carefully timed. The Academy limits acceptance speeches to about 45 seconds per winner. If a speech runs longer, music begins playing to signal that the speaker should wrap up.
Despite this guideline, some winners have exceeded the time limit. Actor Adrian Brody once spoke for five minutes and 40 seconds even after the music started playing. During the speech, he asked the organizers to turn off the music and promised he was wrapping up.

During the ceremony, the production team sometimes uses seat fillers to temporarily occupy empty seats. These individuals step in when nominees or guests leave their seats during commercial breaks or depart early. Their presence helps ensure the audience appears full on camera.
Seat fillers must also follow strict rules. They are required to dress formally and are not allowed to speak to celebrities unless the celebrity initiates the conversation.

The famous Oscar statuette may be covered in 24-karat gold plating, but it cannot be freely sold. According to Academy regulations, winners must first offer to sell their Oscar back to AMPAS for $1 if they wish to dispose of it. This rule also applies to heirs or anyone who receives the statuette through gift or inheritance. Ultimately, the policy helps maintain the symbolic value of the award.

The Oscars may appear effortless on television, but the ceremony operates under a carefully managed set of rules. From fashion guidelines to speech limits, the Academy works to keep the event organized and respectful of the industry’s traditions.
While viewers focus on the glamour and excitement, nominees and guests must follow these expectations throughout the night. These behind-the-scenes rules help ensure that Hollywood’s biggest celebration runs smoothly each year.
