Zendaya’s Style Evolution: How Fashion Became Part of Her Hollywood Brand
March 04, 2026

Hilary Duff helped define early 2000s fashion through “Lizzie McGuire,” but not every look was her favorite. Years later, she revealed the one outfit she disliked most, even as it became one of the most memorable in the franchise.
Hilary Duff became one of Disney Channel’s most recognizable stars in the early 2000s. Her role in “Lizzie McGuire” helped shape a generation of viewers and cemented her place in pop culture.

While the show brought her fame, Duff has openly shared that she did not always agree with the fashion choices for her character.
Duff played Lizzie, a middle schooler navigating friendships, family life, and the challenges of growing up. She later reprised the role in “The Lizzie McGuire Movie,” where she took on a dual performance as both Lizzie and pop star Isabella Parigi.

“The Lizzie McGuire Movie” expanded Duff’s character in a new way. In addition to playing Lizzie, she portrayed Isabella Parigi, an Italian pop star who looks identical to her. This dual role added a new layer to the story and introduced audiences to a more glamorous version of Duff’s on-screen persona.
The film also featured more elaborate costumes compared to the television series. These outfits played a key role in distinguishing Lizzie from Isabella, highlighting their contrasting identities.

Despite the film’s success, Duff revealed that one of its most iconic looks was not her favorite. During an interview with Vanity Fair, she admitted her dislike for Isabella’s green performance outfit.
“I remember hating this green Isabella outfit so much,” she said. “It’s so funny that it’s so iconic.”
The outfit in question is a bold, lime green ensemble. It includes a reflective jacket paired with a matching mini skirt. The skirt features a sheer sequin fabric overlay, adding to its stage-ready appearance. The movie's costumer completed the look with fishnet leggings, sparkly boots, and a green heart-shaped choker.
The green Isabella outfit was intentionally designed to contrast with Lizzie’s look. Lizzie wore a silver outfit, which complemented her blonde hair. In comparison, the lime green color was chosen to suit Isabella’s darker hair.
This visual distinction helped audiences easily separate the two characters, even though both were played by Duff. The contrast reinforced the differences in personality and lifestyle between Lizzie and Isabella.
Duff also pointed out a key difference between the show and the movie when it came to wardrobe. On “Lizzie McGuire,” her outfits were influenced by her personal style. She had a role in selecting the clothes, which made the character feel more authentic to her.
The movie, however, introduced a costumer who took over the wardrobe decisions. This shift resulted in more stylized and theatrical outfits, including the green Isabella look that Duff disliked.
Even though Duff was not a fan of the outfit, she still acknowledged the work behind it. She praised the costumer, saying “she crushed it.”
Hilary Duff was part of a generation of Disney Channel stars who defined the network’s golden era. Alongside names like Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Dylan and Cole Sprouse, and Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, Duff helped shape a wave of teen entertainment that left a lasting mark on pop culture.
