Chris Pratt’s rise to Hollywood stardom did not happen overnight. Long before he became synonymous with major franchises, the actor spent years taking on supporting roles that often cast him in a less flattering light. In a recent interview, Pratt revisited that period and offered a candid look at how those early opportunities shaped his career.

Early Roles That Defined His Starting Point

Pratt recalled a time when he was frequently cast as the kind of character viewers were not meant to root for. One example he highlighted was his role in "Bride Wars," the 2009 romantic comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson. In the film, he played Fletcher, the longtime boyfriend of Hathaway’s character.

Reflecting on the pattern of roles he was offered, Pratt explained, "This is the role that I often was offered from early in my career up until this point, which is the guy you don't want to end up with the girl, and kind of the douche character."

He made it clear that this was not a one-time occurrence. Instead, it became something of a recurring theme. As he put it, "I've been offered that a lot. I dined out on '[expletive] boyfriend' for a long time."

Throughout that phase, Pratt appeared in a range of films where his characters were often messy, inconsiderate, or simply unappealing. Projects like "Wanted," "Jennifer's Body," "Take Me Home Tonight," and "What's Your Number" all featured him in supporting roles that leaned into those traits.

Expanding Beyond One Type of Character

While many of his early performances fit a similar mold, Pratt also took on roles that showed a different side of his abilities. In films such as "Moneyball," "Her," and "Zero Dark Thirty," he portrayed characters who were more grounded and less overtly flawed.

These opportunities helped broaden his range and demonstrated that he was capable of more than just playing the comedic or abrasive boyfriend. Over time, this variety contributed to his transition into leading roles, where he would eventually become a central figure in major productions.

Even so, Pratt does not look back on those earlier roles with regret. Instead, he acknowledges them as an essential part of his journey, helping him gain experience and visibility in a competitive industry.

A Fond Look Back at 'Parks and Recreation'

Among all his past projects, Pratt spoke especially warmly about his time on the television series "Parks and Recreation." The show, which played a key role in raising his profile, offered him both creative freedom and a comfortable working environment.

"Can I tell you what I loved so much about Parks and Rec? I worked seven minutes from my house," he shared. "I would roll into work, and within 20 of parking I would be on camera. I would just throw my fingers through my hair, get up there, and just improv some comedy. It was the best. I loved it."

His character, Andy Dwyer, became a fan favorite for his carefree attitude and earnest personality. The role allowed Pratt to showcase his comedic instincts in a way that resonated strongly with audiences.

The Charm of Andy and April’s Relationship

Pratt also reflected on the dynamic between Andy Dwyer and April Ludgate, played by Aubrey Plaza. Their relationship stood out for its unconventional pairing, blending optimism with dry humor.

"It was like a cat and a dog if they got married," Pratt said. "He's like a golden retriever — eternal optimist — and she's just like aloof, and her character was so into irony and the comedy that comes from irony that she picked the least likely person to end up with, and then fell in love. And it's almost like that act, in itself, is an act of rebellious irony. And I've always loved that."

Chris Pratt’s early career may have been filled with roles that cast him as the guy audiences were not meant to like, but those experiences laid the foundation for his future success. As with any actor who has tried their luck in Hollywood, you don't always get the most ideal part, or even lose iconic roles to other people, but that's just part of the ride.

By embracing a wide range of characters and finding opportunities to grow, he eventually carved out a path to leading-man status. Today, he looks back on those beginnings with appreciation, recognizing them as an important chapter in his journey.
